Faces in the dark.

As promised here are a few pictures of my what's on my painting table, I apologize in advance for the photo quality it's been awhile since i've taken pictures of anything hobby related especially while being sober! Regardless here are a few sneak previews.

When I first started to create this unit for the army I was going to use some of the corsairs from another regiment to fill out their numbers. But as I searched through my bits box I noticed I had quite a few corsairs! The champion is a bit blurry but it is a corsair from 1995(?) I believe.

Along the way of collecting I guess I just bought a lot of something and someone decided to throw a random assortment of old Dark Elf minis. Yes this assassin doesn't have the flair of his newer cousins... But there is something about a 'dagger' that is more akin to a short sword that has appeal. No flashiness or fancy pose this guy is all business.

Another unit that came from my infamous bits box, I needed a ranked unit in the army and had painted ten warriors with shields to use as a throw away in the last Dark Elf book. I ran out of the old warriors but I found some Wood Elves with spears and decided to draft them to the dark side. The result is a sixteen elf unit made to take charges, I am still missing the banner of the unit as I am trying to find something suitable..

This brings down my to do list for the tourney to:
-Jotan Woe Bringer both versions (details)
-Sculpt and paint 5 sets of wings for demonettes into harpies project
-Geothe sculpt/add a few things before priming and painting
-Last but not least base a few minis and add snow effects to the whole army.

On monday I tried to go the local Games Workshop for a game but I went too early and there was only a 40k player up for a game. This made me realize I should attempt to bring both a 40k army and a Fantasy army just in case next time. Though I am not a big fan of 5th edition I am starting to come around ever so slowly, it doesn't hurt that I want to see my dream of an ALL old school (RT/2nd ed) ork army!

Invasion of the Coasts: Part 3

Even the screams of the captured high elf prisoner could not put a smile on Goethe's face. He had lost another battle... and not just against those pitiful humans or unwashed masses of greenskins. But against the Asur the most hated foe of the Druchii, how would Goethe explain failure to the witch king. Especially now with an assassin in the midst of his army!

The assassin managed to take on a regiment of Asur archers in the blink of an eye, as if he rode a cloud of darkness leaving severed limbs in his wake. Goethe could almost say he admired the assassins work if he didn't fear losing his life for displaying such failure on the battlefield.

Goethe paced around in the tent before picking up a curved blade and running his finger across the blade. In one swift action he stuck the blade into the prisoners abdomen "I think I'll make a new cloak!" Goethe exclaimed to himself as he quickly began his grisly trade...

Ouch another game my poor Druchii have lost that's 0-3 for the '09 season! Mike played a good game his army is slowly evolving to what he likes best and that is pretty good. Before his armies tended to be VERY magic heavy while now he takes a heavy shooting army with a solid magic defense. His list from memory:

Swordmaster special character
Mage lvl 2 dispel scroll, vauls unmaking bound item
Mage lvl 2 dispel scroll, anulli crystal (takes PD turns into DD)

Archers x10
Archers x10
Spearmen x20

White Lions x20 full command and banner of sorcery
Sword Masters x20

Repeater bolt thrower x4

I learned a few things in this battle, first and foremost the assassin is quite the bad ass and that is even when I forgot that I can re-roll EVERY turn not just the turn that I charged. Also because of the magic defense of my two main opponents I realize that I need more power dice in order to slowly overpower them. I keep forgetting or just do not see an opitimal time to use the Banner of Cold Blood so I will drop it.

During the battle against the high elves I realized how much I am not keeping to the priorities that were winning me games before. Main combine and concentrate missile fire, use units to block line of sight to more important things. But most of all play cautiously but don't be afraid of risks. Magic is most effective during the first two turns of the game, if i could close the gap and not allow magic or shooting to take a higher toll on my troops I should be able to weather the storm just a little bit better.

I moved around some points but as of now the new list is...

Heros:
Goethe (master) w/ halberd, blood armor and pendant khaeleth
Sameth U'el (sorcerer) w/ lvl 2, dispel scroll and darkstar cloak
Nimue (sorceress) w/ lvl 2, seal of ghrond and dispel scroll
Jotan Woe Bringer (master)w/lance, heavy armor, sea dragon cloak, shield and dark pegasus

Core:
Corsairs x14 w/ full command
Corsairs x12 w/ musician and champ
Crossbowmen x10 w/ shields
Crossbowmen x10 w/ shields
Spearmen x16 w/ full command
Harpies x5
Harpies x5
Assassin w/ additional hand weapon and cloak of twilight

Special:
Cold One Chariot
Cold One Chariot
Executioners x12 w/ musician and champ
Shades x9

Rare:
Repeater Bolt Thrower
Repeater Bolt Thrower

It's almost the exact same list all I did was take a Darkstar Cloak for the extra power dice. I dropped the Banner of Cold Blood and picked up a corsair making the unit of 15 to 14 and the unit of 10 to 12. My army does not rely on static combat resolution but rather hit and run tactics to weaken the enemy. '

I just finished priming a few odd corsairs to round out my unit, I am still considering on converting the second champion I am not a fan of duplicate models. Pictures coming later tonight I was looking through my photobucket account and noticed I had previously snapped a few pictures of my dark elves... till then off I go making "magic" cards hehe.

Invasion of the Coasts: Part 2

In the mountain passes of the dwarves bodies of the dead and dying dark elves littered the ground all the dwarf dead were taken to be given proper burial. Goethe enjoyed watching the carrion birds hover over the dead even if it was at the expense of his own army. At least he had managed to escape any major harm from the dwarves as for the rest of the army... well they were expendable.

He could still hear the damnable ringing that the dwarven anvil made each time it was struck. Thunder seemed to belt out from the skies and even made the stunted dwarves move alarmingly fast! A shade approached Geothe interrupting his thoughts, though usually an almost suicidal task he brought good news to Geothe in one word... "Asur".

Hoj's List:

Rune Lord Anvil of Doom GW, SH, RoStone, RoSpellbrk, RoFurnace, MRoBalance
Thane BSB, MRoGrom, RoPreservation, RoFire, RoFurnace, RoStrike
Dragon Slayer
Warriors x21 FC, SH
Longbeards x21 FC, SH, Battle, Stoic
Quarrellers x10 SH
Hammerers x20 FC, SH, Stoic
Miners x10 Champ
Gruge Thrower Engineer, RoAcc, RoPen, RoBurn
Bolt Thrower Engineer, RoPen
Bolt Thrower Engineer, RoBurn
Organ Gun
Gyro
Total Point Value = 2245

Going into this battle I was more worried about Hoj's artillery rather than his infantry, but I learned the hard way that dwarven infantry is nothing to mess around with! Between both units of harpies and Jotan I managed to take out all of his warmachines fairly easily, though he suffered a severe case of "rubber lance syndrome" when he tried to attack the rune lord... To his credit Jotan might of died but his mighty pegasus managed to wound the runelord and run away a round or two later.

Magic was ineffective because of 8 dispel dice to my 5 though one or two spells got off they weren't enough to really take note of it. I'm seriously thinking of dropping the banner of cold blood (which I have no idea when to use it..) and a corsair champion or corsair to get the darkstar cloak (+1 Power Die to caster).

My chariots as always rarely die though they are starting to slack in the killing department. They would go into a unit cause a few casualties break, rally, rinse and repeat. But other than that To 5, Sv. 3+, Ld 9 AND WS 5 has made a real bane to anyone looking to take them on.

Without argument the turning point of the game was when the anvil sent a unit of long beards (with thane bsb) barreling into combat eliminating two units in one swift stroke. Without my bolt throwers (who were taken out by the anvil..) I couldn't soften up the dwarven infantry units enough to make an real damage to them (to lose their ranks and lower their numbers a bit).

As I said before I am still getting used to the fact of playing with my 1500pt army that barely lost to fighting and losing my battles. But at least it's a fun obstacle learning how to handle more units and the intricacies of the rules at the same time.

A gathering darkness in the sky...

Ok so I think I have finally gotten down more or less what I want to take here is the list:

Heros:
Goethe (master) w/ halberd, blood armor and pendant khaeleth
Sameth U'el (sorcerer) w/ lvl 2, dispel scroll and seal of ghrond
Nimue (sorceress) w/ lvl 2, tome of furion and dispel scroll
Jotan Woe Bringer (master)w/lance, heavy armor, sea dragon cloak, shield and dark pegasus

Core:
Corsairs x15 w/ full command and banner of cold blood
Corsairs x10 w/ musician and champ
Crossbowmen x10 w/ shields
Crossbowmen x10 w/ shields
Spearmen x16 w/ full command
Harpies x5
Harpies x5
Assassin w/ additional hand weapon and cloak of twilight

Special:
Cold One Chariot
Cold One Chariot
Executioners x12 w/ musician and champ
Shades x9

Rare:
Repeater Bolt Thrower
Repeater Bolt Thrower

As always my army is semi-shooty whittling down some units before I hit with any of my hammer units. I know that none of my characters are strong or can go head to head against other enemy characters and that's fine. I don't tend to fight fair anyway why would I want to put my characters into any real danger.... No in true dark elf fashion I will pick on weaker units and run if the fight isn't going my way.

I initially wanted Jotan to carry a deathmask like he usually does but I didn't have the points. Also I wanted to give the assassin the rune of khaine (giving him an extra d3 attacks) but again not enough points. I will test out teh list over the coming weeks and see if i can manage to move a few points here and there. I'm namely looking at the harpies because I only have nine in a state of disrepair.

Though having two units of harpies, a master on pegasus and the assassin with the cloak that has a bound 'steed of shadows' spell does make one hell of a war machine/mage hunting posse. We will see how things play out, for now I have a list that took me the entirety of my work shift (6 hours) and I am completely satisfied with it. Lets see what my opponents think...

Preparing for war..

Looks like Goethe will get too see more of the old world soon, there is a tournament on the 7th of February a little less than a month away. Though I would love to bring my orcs i have a whole two models assembled and fully converted (pics soon I promise!). The prospect of a tournament actually makes me quite giddy, it's been awhile since anyone in the group has been to one.

So far the only details that I can get is that it is 2250 point tourney, I have never really played big games in fantasy. My Dark Elves were created for 1500pt battles when I first created them, which they easily dominated. I admit that I somewhat struggle when playing any games higher than that. I am JUST getting the hang of playing 2000 point games in fantasy.

Regardless my anticipation of getting back into the tourney scene overrides my inability to handle the army... I want to expand the army in a cost efficient way as I am trying to save some cash for future trips and fleshing out the orc army. Here is my list roughly...

Heros:
Goethe (master) w/ halberd, blood armor and pendant khaeleth
Sameth U'el (sorcerer) w/ lvl 2, dispel scroll and seal of ghrond
Nimue (sorceress) w/ lvl 2 and dispel scroll

Core:
Corsairs x15 w/ full command
Corsairs x10 w/ musician and champ
Crossbowmen x10 w/ shields
Crossbowmen x10 w/ shields
Spearmen x15 w/ full command
Harpies x5
Harpies x5

Special:
Cold One Chariot
Cold One Chariot
Executioners x12 w/ musician and champ
Shades x9

Rare:
Repeater Bolt Thrower
Repeater Bolt Thrower

this clocks in at more of less 1900pts give or take, I tried to stick to the theme of a raiding force on a black arc. Though I admit that chariots and executioners are selfish choices when it comes to going against the theme... The spear men will be modeled out of the new plastic corsairs. With a sort of shield wall being the first rank something like a moving mantlet.... I hope I can model it better than I can explain it lol.

This gives me more or less 350pts to play around with the thought of getting an assassin is highly tempting. I have an old school model which i might use to play test or possibly paint and press into service if cash is tight. Another favorite of mine would be a maser with a death mask riding a Pegasus, I could terror bomb some armies and go warmachine hunting the best of both worlds... ah well hopefully I get to test out the list on friday against mike. Tomorrow I am off from work so I think I will seize the opportunity to snap some pictures... till then!

Preparing for a Tournament

Preparing for a Tournament:

There comes a time in every gamer’s life when they feel the strange urge to leave their comfortable den of gaming and venture out to find new competition. To most gamers this means but one thing… Tournaments! In this article I hope to give you some general advice on how to prepare for an upcoming tournament whether you are a new to the scene or just need some general advice for the next upcoming tournament.

Pre- Tournament:

Some of the things to consider when signing up for a tournament are:
What army are you taking?
Have you practiced enough with said army?
How many points is the tournament?
Are there any special rules that might be in effect?
Do I have enough painted?

These are some important questions to ask yourself before you sign into the tournament. I would suggest an army you are comfortable with as you will know the full extent of the armies’ abilities and will not have to venture to the rulebook/codex in order to figure out abilities.

*Though as a side note there is nothing more exciting than starting an army from scratch for a specific tournament.

If you do not have enough practice for your army play some different scenarios with your group. Not only will this spice up regular gaming but also slowly train your ways of thinking with the army you have chosen to be a bit more versatile when it comes to tactical thinking.

Low and behold the days loom near and you open your mini case to find out all those nights spent doing ‘other projects’ resulted in you not finishing your army. Usually what happens in this stage is a couple of all nighters trying to make you army look perfect, basing them with exotic materials and writing words no one can possibly read on their armor.

The best advice I can honestly give you is just because you do not get tons of minis accomplished in one sitting doesn’t mean that painting night was a failure. It’s understandable that most people do things besides the hobby, we go out, watch movies, play video or computer games and so forth. Try and set a simple goal for yourself, maybe today you only paint the base color of the miniatures, tomorrow you do all of one color and so on.

This method of painting when applied to batches of miniatures is known as assembly line painting. By applying this method you are saving time by painting groups of miniatures in a relatively small amount of time, but we will talk more about that in it’s respective article.

Tournament Day:

You are already showered possibly had some breakfast in you and are standing on the registration line. Some important things to ponder while you wait are: did you bring enough dice? Where are your rulebooks and/or codexes? Is there extra glue? Because accidents will happen eventually and finally do you think you have enough energy to spend anywhere between 6-8 hours gaming.

Most people would think they could handle that many hours of gaming and even more but it’s not quite as easy as it seems. Some things to consider are: you will be standing on your feet for most if not all of those hours. You will be constantly hunched over pushing models. You have to be alert to almost every dice roll and let’s not forget to turn on the brain today at every turn you are making decisions and hopefully thinking ahead of what can happen in game.

My suggestions to try and slow exhaustion are: Drink water instead of soda or an energy drink, for although they might help you by giving you a ‘boost’ you will eventually crash when the boost goes away and be even more tired. If you ate breakfast (and I hope you did) don’t stuff your face at the buffet because a couple of hours later when the tournament organizers are calling for tables/time you might be stuck on the john regretting it. Eat something light and take some fruits or cereal with you as a snack in between rounds. You can eat a feast fit for a king once the tournament is over and you are discussing the results with friends over dinner.

Important Things to Remember:

-Always keep your eye on the objective! Whether it’s a hill or a mountain full of corpses always remember that though your army might get pounded to dust holding onto “Outpost 5” with an odd unit can mean victory.

-Know the rules to your own army, it is not up to the opponent to remind you of every single rule of YOUR army. Sure some people will remind you but often times people are so caught up trying to remember a plethora of things that they might forget.

-Resolve a rules dispute in a calm manner. This can’t be said enough not only because it shows you are a good sport and willing to hear your opponents view of the rules. But also if there is sportsmanship scores in the tournament arguing or getting loud could lose you a few points. All else fails just call a judge and say that you weren’t exactly sure how it is ruled and your group plays it differently. Don’t make a big fuss and don’t call your opponent a liar no one wants to be “that guy” at a tournament. Trust me.

-Watch the clock. Time literally tends to fly between greeting your opponent, reading the mission and deployment you would be surprised how much time is used up. Complete all your turns in a timely matter and if your opponent is taking too long politely hint that the round will be over at a certain time and that you can’t wait to take that break in between rounds.

-Have fun! The most important thing to remember! Though you are in a tournament remember that you play with toy soldiers in order to relax not to suffer a brain aneurysm.

Those are but a few suggestions that most players will know somewhat but sometimes fail to practice when the big day comes. It’s easy to get caught up in life and forget some of these simple but effective guidelines that can make your tournament experience both fun and rewarding.

Invasion of the Coasts: Part 1

Goethe waited till the ogres retreated back to their camp to rise from the pile of bodies where he hid himself. He was almost discovered by a gnoblar rounding up spare weapons but before it could squeal Goethe removed it's head in one swift motion. Out of thin air the demon sorcerer Sameth U'el appeared, Goethe was neither surprised or amazed at the fact that the sorcerer lived. Sameth was bound to the magical trinket that Goethe held in his possession, it had survived many centuries and had many masters Sameth serving each of them faithfully if not disdainfully. After all what demon would enjoy going back formless to the aether?

"That is the last time I deal with those filthy ogres!" exclaimed Geothe as he made his way back to the camp. The ogres would attempt to attack the camp if they could only stop from gorging themselves of the freshly fallen...

This was a game between my Dark Elves and Hoj's Ogre Kingdoms as you can tell from the brief description things did not go well for the Druchii this game. I even said it would be a bad game for me when I was unpacking my army and Goethe's sword broke, yes I believe in omens. Especially when I can attribute my army completely being wiped out because of a failed stupidity check. Yup i was preparing my chariot inching it closer so that Hoj would not be able to flee far enough. But luck can't always work in your favor right?

Without my flanking chariot to keep Hoj on the back foot i had to take frontal charges by ogres all by my lonesome. I must admit that my corsairs and Goethe held out many a round against a unit of Iron Guts with a Butcher (augmented by some spell of course). Soon after the whole line crumbled and it was only a matter of time, the terrain didn't favor me much essentially having to stand off against much tougher opponents unsupported. High elves and Dwarves would have loved the position but my army relies on attack or bait charges while my hammer units get ready. c'est la vie i suppose.

I also managed to play a game using Hoj's Ogre Kingdoms army but Mike's High Elves quickly put an end to that! No major highlights of that came what so ever I played poorly and four bolt throwers will make sure I pay the butcher's bill for it. Ah well I just wanted to try out ogres purely out curiosity. Curiosity sated so moving on..

I'm starting to work on the orcs, there is loads of small green stuff work to do on them. I have decided to go with an asian/mongol look for them. So mustaches/beards and fur brimmed hats are in this season! I have more or less hammered down what i want to try out in the next game I even made a few movement trays to make things easier... now where did i put that sculpting tool...
